summary: "After a morning of October rain clears, an open square cut with a knife-thin bevel into a warm-lit ceiling frames the deep cobalt sky overhead—while directly below on the cool concrete floor, a shallow square of rainwater holds the exact same sky upside down, stirred only by one last falling drop and a golden ginkgo leaf."

# Two Squares of Sky

If you hide the thickness of an edge well enough, the air on the other side stops looking like distance and starts looking like paint.

All morning it rained steadily, drumming on the glass corridors and running down through the open square cut into the ceiling of the skyspace chamber. By early afternoon the storm broke, leaving behind a high, washed October sky of deep cobalt and slate, with rags of pale apricot cloud drifting slowly from the sea toward the mountains.

Standing inside the room after the rain stops, you are caught between two identical windows. Overhead, the warm amber glow hidden behind the stone bench washes the ceiling until the beveled rim of the roof opening vanishes into a razor line, making the real sky look like a flat square of luminous blue silk stretched tight across the plaster. And directly underfoot, in the center of the cool gray concrete floor, the morning storm has left a shallow, ruler-straight square of rainwater that holds the exact same sky and drifting clouds upside down.

For minutes at a time the lower sky is as motionless as the upper one—until a single leftover drop gathers on the knife-edge lip overhead and lets go, sending a quiet ring of light trembling across the clouds at your feet.
