summary: "Deep in the cedar ravine of Kakusenkei Gorge beside the white mist of Fudo Waterfall, a low tatami platform cantilevers over the jade current of the Daishoji River—where a vermilion nodate umbrella casts warm rose light across a lathe-turned Yamanaka sensuji lacquer tray, cold matcha shiruko with twin shiratama dumplings, and a glass of amber Kaga-bocha."

# The Red Umbrella by the Rapids

Halfway down the gorge path between the all-cypress curve of Korogi Bridge and the crimson ribs of Ayatori Bridge, the trail drops down to the water's level and the sound of the river takes over the whole valley.

Right where the white foam of Fudo Waterfall spills into the jade pool of the Daishoji River, a low wooden platform cantilevers out over the boulders. Even in late October, when the first five-lobed maple leaves are turning persimmon and carmine along the upper cliffs and drifting past on the current, the air two feet above the rapids carries the cool, mineral chill of mountain snowmelt.

Then you step onto the woven rush tatami under the tall vermilion *nodate* umbrella, and the light changes temperature. Overhead, the afternoon sun filters through oiled *washi* paper and twenty-six radiating bamboo ribs, tinting the straw mat and the river foam below in a quiet rose glow. On a circular Yamanaka wood-turned tray—grooved with hair-fine concentric *sensuji* rings that catch the grain of the timber beneath the dark lacquer—sits a wide vermilion bowl of cold matcha *shiruko* with two snowy *shiratama* dumplings and a fleck of gold leaf, beside a tall glass of roasted *Kaga-bocha* glowing like clear amber against the dark ravine.
